Washington D.C., Jan 31, 2012 / 03:16 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- The U.S. Catholic bishops’ chairman for religious liberty says the Obama administration’s contraception mandate tramples “the mandate of Jesus Christ” by requiring Catholic employers to choose between violating their consciences and denying services to non-Catholics. Bishop William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Conn., who chairs the U.S. Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, denounced the mandate in a Jan. 27 guest article in the Washington Post. Bishop Lori warned of the “horrific” and “alarming” consequences that would come from forcing Catholic organizations to limit their services to members of their own faith in order to protect their religious liberty. “In short, the administration is dictating that Catholic institutions and individual employers violate what America has always considered inviolable – their religious liberty and freedom of conscience,” he said. …

New York Times Says Slavery Bad, But Abortion Good

The New York Times takes a firm stance against slavery. The “Gray Lady”—as the authoritative “newspaper of record” was once known–wants everyone to know that she won’t tolerate backsliding on the great moral issue of the nineteenth century. I take no issue with the Times on slavery or on segregation. The liberal conscience of America—for …

Bearers of the Word: An Interview with Dan McCarthy

Here is the original post: Bearers of the Word: An Interview with Dan McCarthy

With this third entry in our “Bearers of the Word” series, I’m deeply honored to speak with my friend and ally, Dan McCarthy, one of the foremost thinkers and editors in the conservative movement.  Dan, as fits his person, offers us some very candid and thought-provoking ideas on the nature of Catholicism and its future in America.  Dan is still a young man, and we can continue to expect important things from him for a very long time to come.  This interview is packed with ideas and perceptive insights.  Enjoy. ***** BB: First, Dan, thanks so much for taking the time to talk with me (and CatholicVote).  I know how busy you are.  To begin, please tell us about yourself. DMcC: I’m 34, from the Midwest, now living in Arlington, Virginia, where I edit a magazine called The American Conservative . It started in 2002 as a traditional conservative alternative to George W. …

Washington D.C., Jan 23, 2012 / 11:14 am ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston told over a thousand young people at a prayer vigil in D.C. that the pro-life movement depends on their loving witness in the face of a hostile culture. “You are a good infection,” the cardinal told the youth gathered at the opening Mass for the National Prayer Vigil for Life. “Do not underestimate your presence.” More than 10,000 people gathered on the evening of Jan. 22 for Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, including many young people from across the country. Divine Impatience

Rosa Parks refusing to move to the back of the bus. Martin Luther King Jr. writing from Birmingham Jail that justice cannot wait forever. Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s contention, in the very face of the Gulag, that one word of truth outweighs the whole world. Wherever oppressive regimes have existed, a single individual standing up for what’s right has often changed the arc of history. Patience, perseverance, and civility are all indispensable human virtues. But a kind of divine impatience, sense of urgency, and civic activism are also, at times, crucial. …

A Review of Raised Right

Read the complete text here: A Review of Raised Right

Sometimes its hard to understand why young people deviate from the conservative mentalities of their parents during their young adult years, but Raised Right: How I Untangled my Faith from Politics offers an explanation for the switch. Recounting experiences of faith and politics through childhood into young adult years, Raised Right is an early memoir, chronicling Alisa Harris leap, like that of many young people, across the political divide from right to left. Theres some irony in the title, it seems, because much of what Harris suggests is that she was actually raised wrong, at least in a political sense. Though she dedicates the book to her parents and in the end praises them for their adoption of two Haitian children, her account of her religious and academic education comes off as pretty nutty. Her family attends a charismatic church she depicts in wacky terms early in her childhood, and later moves to something of the conservative evangelical sort where denim-skirt-clad homeschoolers hold to what Harris now considers ultra-conservative views on politics and family. Their interest in local and national politics is intense: They picket regularly for pro-life causes, enroll their children in debate clubs that argue for conservative political ideas, and rally for Bush in the 2000 election. Harris follows along wholeheartedly through it all, wielding her W” tote bag while fiercely imagining with her parents and pastors that political victories for the religious right will restore Christs rule on earth. Halfway through the book Harris perspective changes from describing her sheltered and skewed childhood to recounting her coming of age: At college (the conservative Hillsdale), she finds her own identity, steeps herself in the humanities, embraces biblical egalitarianism, and develops an interest in journalism, which leads her to New York City to begin her career as a writer for a Christian magazine. …
