White House’s defense of mandate called inaccurate, misleading

Washington D.C., Feb 3, 2012 / 01:05 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- An expert in religious freedom says that the White House’s defense of the contraception mandate contains inaccurate information and does not address the main complaints raised by its critics. Brian Walsh, executive director of the American Religious Freedom program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said that some of the the claims made by the White House are “not factually accurate” and a number of its points “aren’t even relevant.” “It’s certainly not a direct response” to the concerns of religious freedom that have been raised in recent days, but is simply restating the administration’s position on contraception,Walsh told n Feb. 2. Walsh’s remarks were aimed at a Feb. 1 blog post by Cecilia Muñoz, the Director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council, who attempted to clarify “the facts” surrounding the controversial mandate. On Jan. 20, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that virtually all employers would be required to purchase health insurance plans that cover contraception – including drugs that cause abortion – and sterilization at no cost to employees. The very narrow religious exemption to the mandate includes only those organizations that exist for the purpose of inculcating religious values and that both primarily serve and employ members of their own faith. …

Dallas, Texas, Feb 1, 2012 / 01:26 am ( CNA/EWTN News ).- In the midst of a congressional investigation, Planned Parenthood has lost the support of the nation’s leading breast cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Last year Planned Parenthood received roughly $680,000 in grants from Komen and $580,000 the year before. Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun told the Associated Press that the cutoff is a result of the charity’s recently adopted criteria which prohibits giving grants to organizations undergoing investigations by local, state or federal authorities. Planned Parenthood has been the subject of a federal investigation headed by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) since last year.

Obama administration’s commitment to religious freedom questioned

Washington D.C., Jan 31, 2012 / 06:04 am ( .- Dr. Thomas Farr believes that the Obama administration’s verbal commitment to protecting religious freedom around the globe is not being backed up with sufficient action. “The administration has invested far more energy and resources in the international advancement of LGBT rights than it has the advancement of religious freedom,” said Farr, who served as the original director of the State Department’s Office of International Religious Freedom. Farr told n Jan. 27 that the current administration is not doing enough to support “one of the most important foreign policy initiatives undertaken by the United States.” The topic of religious freedom was recently addressed in the video series “Conversations with America,” which features top State Department officials holding online discussions with leaders of non-governmental organizations and citizens from around the country.

Anchorage, Alaska, Jan 22, 2012 / 01:03 pm ( .- Iraq war veteran Samuel Paul Albers had come across hard times and was living at Brother Francis Shelter in Anchorage, Alaska in March 2011 when he came down with a chest cold and sinus infection. Thanks to a free clinic which is staffed by volunteers from Providence Alaska Medical Center also in Anchorage, Albers received much needed health care. Albers, who has a degree in human services, now works at the shelter, is moving into a case management position there, and has lived in his own home since August of 2011. As part of his new job, he counts heads after the shelter’s evening meal. The numbers are then relayed to Providence, which provides all dinners for the shelter every night of the year. Lately, the shelter has served between 200 and 275 meals a night. But many of the homeless also require basic medical care. …

Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said in a Jan. 20 statement that religious employers who object to providing the coverage will be required to comply with the new law by Aug. 1, 2013, one year later than the initial deadline.

Washington D.C., Jan 20, 2012 / 06:31 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Numerous religious leaders slammed the Obama administration for violating consciences by refusing to reverse a contraception mandate and instead delay its full implementation by only a year. “Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. bishops’ conference. “This shouldn’t happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights.” He called the decision “literally unconscionable” in a Jan. 20 response statement and said that the government is essentially “saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.” The cardinal-designate vowed that the bishops will work to overturn the mandate and institute freedom of conscience protections for all Americans.

Olympia, Wash., Jan 17, 2012 / 06:03 am ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Proposed gay “marriage” legislation in Washington state would add to “the forces already undermining family life today,” the state’s Catholic bishops warned. In a January 2012 statement, the bishops stressed that the “stability of society depends on the stability of family life in which a man and a woman conceive and nurture new life.” They noted in their letter titled “Marriage and the Common Good” that the civil recognition of marriage as between one man and one woman has given “countless generations of children the incomparable benefit of a loving mother and father committed to one another in a lifelong union.” On Jan. 13, 23 senators, including two Republicans, introduced legislation that would grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Gov. Christine Gregoire, a Catholic Democrat, had requested the bill which will require 25 votes to pass the state Senate. In response to the move, the bishops explained that defining marriage in terms of the relationship between a man and a woman and its “important role” in guaranteeing future generations, the state recognizes the “irreplaceable contribution” married couples make to society. Changing the definition of marriage means there are no special laws to support and recognize this

Washington D.C., Jan 11, 2012 / 05:58 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Jan. 11 to uphold the “ministerial exception” that allows religious organizations to hire and fire ministers without interference from the government. The decision marks a “big rejection of this administration’s treatment of religious liberty,” said Mark Rienzi, an attorney for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which helped represent Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church in the case. Rienzi told n Jan. 11 that the Hosanna-Tabor case is “easily the most important religious freedom case in the last 20 years.” In Hosanna-Tabor v. Hamden, Conn., Jan 9, 2012 / 07:20 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- A three-year survey of women’s religious life in the United States has concluded with the filing of a final report by the Vatican-appointed Apostolic Visitator Mother Mary Clare Millea. “Although there are concerns in religious life that warrant support and attention, the enduring reality is one of fidelity, joy, and hope,” Mother Millea said in a Jan. 9 release announcing the submission of her findings to the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Along with her comprehensive report on women’s religious communities, Mother Millea is presenting individual reports on nearly 400 religious institutes to the congregation’s secretary Archbishop Joseph Tobin. These reports are likely to be completed by the spring of 2012. Cardinal Franc Rodé, the congregation’s former prefect, began the visitation in December 2008, to “look into the quality of life” of communities nationwide. Mother Millea, who is the Superior General of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and hails from the U.S., oversaw the process and conducted much of the research. Her review of women’s religious institutes spanned 2009 and 2010, with a further year dedicated to compiling and summarizing the findings…

Philadelphia, Pa., Jan 6, 2012 / 04:08 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Catholic schools must move forward with hope and realism, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput said as his education commission announced school mergers and closings in a Jan. 6 report. “We need to honor the great history of Catholic education in our archdiocese. But we must not be constrained by it,” the archbishop said in a letter to the Blue Ribbon Commission. “Nostalgia for the past is a bad foundation if we want to think clearly and build creatively for the future.” He praised the authors of the “Faith in the Future” report for their “courage in facing the hard financial realities burdening many of our schools,” nearly 50 of which may be closed or merged. During hard times, he said, “justice requires that we use our resources to best effect,” while pursuing “new forms of governance, government advocacy and foundation funding.” “It is not enough for Catholic education to survive,” Archbishop Chaput stated. “It needs to grow, and we cannot make that happen with old behaviors and models of operation.” “The goal of Catholic education remains the same: We need to give our young people a zeal for the Catholic faith and a strong moral character, and in our schools, a superior academic curriculum. …
