Read the original post: DIY throat blessings
By Mary DeTurris Poust It’s the Feast of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. That can only mean one thing here at OSV Daily Take. It’s time for me to pull out the old do-it-yourself throat blessing post for those people who can’t getting a blessing at their own parish. I’m not one to let such traditions go so easily. I’ve been known to hold candles up to the throats of my own kids or my faith formation students to give them the blessing they won’t get otherwise. In fact, I’ve got a new set of white candles in arm’s reach right now, just waiting for the kids to arrive home from school. Don’t worry. …

The rest is here: Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 Notable Updates
1) My list of bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate now stands at 115 . So well over half of the U.S. bishops who head dioceses have spoken out. 2) Senator Marco Rubio today introduced a bill (“the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012″) to repeal the Obama/HHS mandate. This is significant because the Democrat-controlled Senate will be the hardest obstacle to overcome on the way to getting legislation to President Obama’s desk to overturn this onerous law. 3) Pat Buchanan predicts that Catholics can win this fight if they play for keeps: Not only should the bishops file suit in federal court against the president and Sebelius for violation of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, they should inform the White House that no bishop will give an invocation at the Democratic Convention. Then, they should inform the White House that in the last two weeks of the 2012 campaign, priests in every parish will read from the pulpit at Sunday mass a letter denouncing Obama as anti-Catholic for denying the Church its right to live according to its beliefs. If Obama loses the Catholic vote, he loses the election…

I’ve been getting an awful lot of flack for this morning’s post. Some people think it’s too depressing. Which maybe it is. Others that I’m suggesting it’s too late to fight back. Which I’m not. So, what was my point, however badly made? That we can’t win this fight in the long term on the legislative or legal fronts alone. Here’s the deal…

Emily Stimpson (whom I don’t think I know except through her writing) has an excellent post from earlier today. Basically, part of the problem we’re faced with in crises like the HHS mandate on contraception and attempts to redefine marriage is that the Catholic faithful hardly know the Church’s teachings and many of us have not been living them. Even those of us who are regular church-goers may be shaky on the issues because we rarely hear about them. For decades, post Vatican II, the Catholic Church has been trying to hammer out the roles of the clergy and the laity while at the same time trying to handle a host of other serious issues. I think the HHS mandate made it abundantly clear that we have a lot of work to do. It should have started a long time ago, but nevertheless it has to happen soon if we’re going to be able to exist freely as a Church. George Weigel had a very provocative piece in the December 2011 of First Things : “The Evangelical Reform of Catholic Advocacy: Effective witness in the public square requires a new focus on what the Church knows.” (Unfortunately, a subscription is required, which is too bad since it’s really a call to action. If you don’t have a subscription, get one or find a friend who has one.) I think he’s spot on: Even on questions of first principles, the Church’s public advocacy has been weakened by the secularist tide throughout Western society, by two generations of ineffective catechesis that have produced many Catholic politicians and voters who are baptized pagans, and by the scandals of the past decade. …

More: Too Little, Too Late?
For all those wanting a little vim and vigor with their morning coffee, Bishop David Zubick’s take on the Obama contraception mandate should do the trick. If it’s anything, it’s chock full of both. Bishop Zubick writes: Kathleen Sebelius and through her, the Obama administration, have said “To Hell with You” to the Catholic faithful of the United States. To Hell with your religious beliefs, To Hell with your religious liberty, To Hell with your freedom of conscience. We’ll give you a year, they are saying, and then you have to knuckle under. As Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops responded, “in effect, the president is saying that we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.” Sadly, while reading his letter, as well as so many other impassioned condemnations of the ruling from our bishops, priests, and Catholic leaders, I can’t help but find myself wondering if we’re pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Don’t get me wrong. …

Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan 27, 2012 / 03:15 am ( .- The new federal contraception mandate is “like a slap in the face” that says “To Hell with you!” to Catholics and religious freedom, Bishop David A. Zubik of Pittsburgh said. “This is government by fiat that attacks the rights of everyone – not only Catholics; not only people of all religion. At no other time in memory or history has there been such a governmental intrusion on freedom not only with regard to religion, but even across-the-board with all citizens,” Bishop Zubik wrote in the Jan. 27 edition of the Pittsburgh Catholic. “Kathleen Sebelius (Health and Human Services Secretary) and through her, the Obama administration, have said ‘To Hell with You’ to the Catholic faithful of the United States,” he charged, adding that the administration has damned Catholics’ religious beliefs, religious liberty and freedom of conscience. The new rules from the Department of Health and Human Services mandate insurance coverage for “preventive services,” a category which the department ruled covers sterilization and contraception, including an abortifacient drug. Catholic teaching recognizes the use of these procedures and drugs as sinful, but the mandate’s religious exemption is narrow and will not “practically speaking” apply to many Catholic health systems, educational institutions, charities and other organization, the bishop said…

By JIM GRAVES | Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz refers to his ecclesiastical jurisdiction as “our little diocese on the plains.” But its appearance — to some — as a remote, largely rural backwater is deceptive. Visit link: Bishop Vasa: “the state has a duty to defend and protect life”
Bishop Robert Vasa of Santa Rosa, California delivered the following remarks to a pro-life rally on Sunday, January 22, 2012 – the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. They are worth sharing with faithful Catholics across the country. Catholics, Christians, Muslims, Believers in God, Believers in the Inherent Dignity of the Human Person I come before you to encourage you to persevere and to avoid any semblance of frustration or discouragement. We would all like to see major changes in the legal system so that pre-born human beings could be given a fighting chance to survive and that would be recognized as success but even without that we are successful. We would all like to see the Parental Notification Initiative established as law in California but even without that we are successful. We would like to see a law requiring true informed consent prior to any abortion, including a high resolution ultra-sound but even without that we are successful. There are many things we would like to see in the defense of innocent human life but even without these we are already successful. Each time we take up our banners again, each time we stand up for life, each time we challenge the present system of abortion on demand, each time we positively impact the life of a frightened teen mother, each time we support a pregnancy support center, we are striving against evil and as long as we continue to persist and strive and persevere we are successful. We fail only if we succumb to frustration and discouragement and leave the field of battle. Keep in Mind: 1) A preborn baby, however small, is a being of human origin — Thus a Human being. 2) Fr Spitzer, SJ tells us: When in doubt, err on the side of assuming and according personhood to every being of human origin, whether or not the activities of that being manifest obvious and clear qualities of personhood. 3) The state has a duty to defend and protect life and when it fails to do so, it causes immeasurable harm not only to the person who lacks protection but to the entire society. …
