Mitt Romney Writes Op-Ed Against HHS Mandate

Original post: Mitt Romney Writes Op-Ed Against HHS Mandate

By EWTN NEWS/CNA | Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has pledged to overturn the HHS contraception mandate that he says takes “particular aim” at Catholics. “I stand with the Catholic bishops and all religious organizations in their strenuous objection to this liberty- and conscience-stifling regulation,” Romney wrote in a Feb. 3 Washington Examiner column titled “President Obama vs. Religious Liberty.” If … …

Tradere: to hand on that which was handed to you.

View post: Tradere: to hand on that which was handed to you.

I’m driving to a funeral in the morning. I’ll try not to drop tears on my keyboard as I type this. Please indulge a small autobiography of faith. I haven’t seen my old friend, Mr. Bosler, Big Ray, for a few years. But the fondness and the memories have not faded with time. Mr. Bosler was the one who taught me that the faith is reasonable…

The Weirdness of Commanding Love

Go directly to: The Weirdness of Commanding Love

The greatest commandment, Jesus tells us, is: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Well, of course. But a commandment? I tend to empathize with the Danish Philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, who writes, in Works of Love, ‘You shall love… is the very mark of Christian love and is its distinctive characteristicthat it contains this apparent contradiction: to love is a duty…. Is it not remarkable that in the whole New Testament there is not a single word about erotic love in the sense in which the poet celebrates it and paganism idolized it? …

The New Anti-Catholicism: Occupy the Vatican

Go directly to: The New Anti-Catholicism: Occupy the Vatican

The old anti-Catholicism found its expression in the mid-nineteenth century when the first large wave of Catholic immigrants arrived in the United States. Some of these immigrant groups had set up their own private religious schools. Many non-Catholic Americans, however, believed that Catholic schools indoctrinated students in superstitions that were inconsistent with the principles of American democracy. Therefore, in order to make sure that such schools would not receive government funding of any sort, federal and state legislation was proposed that forbade the use of public resources for “religious,” i.e. Catholic, purposes.

Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 More Important Updates [Updated w/ Video]

Plenty happening on this story: 1) By my updated count , over 70% of bishops who head dioceses in the U.S. have spoken out against the mandate (131 of 184). I think we’ll pass 75% this weekend easily as more and more bishops join the movement. 2) CNSNews reports that White House press secretary Jay Carney claimed there was “no constitutional rights issue” when questioned about the mandate. This coming from the administration that just lost their religious liberty argument 9-0 at the Supreme Court. UPDATE — here is the video: At one point he says: “I would also just note that our robust partnerships with the Catholic Church and other communities of faith will continue.” — I wouldn’t be so sure. The Commonweal blog has a full transcript of both times the issue came up in the press briefing. Some clues are beginning to emerge about the Obama’s administration’s attitude towards the Catholic counter-reaction, but more on that from me later…

Help Save Lives: Support Susan G. Komen Against Planned Parenthood!

Huge news in the battle to get the truth out about Planned Parenthood. Susan G. Komen , one of the world’s most respected organizations dedicated to fighting cancer, has dropped all ties with Planned Parenthood . In addition to the over hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding Planned Parenthood loses from this move, it’s a huge blow to Planned Parenthood’s credibility. Planned Parenthood and its liberal pro-abortion allies are filling the air waves and trying to change the subject , claiming this is about Susan G. Komen making a political decision to defund Planned Parenthood. This is not about Susan G. Komen.  This is about Planned Parenthood. …

When we lose sight of ‘the very poor’

Read more from the original source: When we lose sight of ‘the very poor’

Posted by Mary DeTurris Poust Regardless of which side of the political fence you’re on, you’ll want to head over to Ed Mechmann’s blog, Stepping Out of the Boat , to read his observations on the recent controversy over Mitt Romney’s comment that he wasn’t “concerned about the very poor.” Can we ever — no matter how we think poverty should be addressed through public policy — stop being concerned about those people who deal with hunger, homelessness, lack of medical care and more every day? In context or out of context, it’s hard to hear Romney’s comment and not feel a lack of compassion, a harshness that benefits no one. Ed’s post drove home that point for me. Here’s what he had to say on his blog : A candidate for the presidency, in a recent interview, remarked that he wasn’t “concerned about the very poor” because there is a sufficient “safety net” that will help them in their need. One can debate long into the night the question of the best public policies to address the problem of poverty in the United States. There are people of good will who stress-free market solutions, such as policies that emphasize education and economic opportunity. There are others of good will who emphasize the need for private charity to address the needs of poor people. And there are others who believe that the problem requires increased spending by local, state or federal government programs. …

Justice Without Foundations by Robert P. Kraynak

See the original post here: Justice Without Foundations by Robert P. Kraynak

Every age has beliefs about the good life and about ultimate reality that seem normal at the time but are strange and inconsistent when viewed from a broader, more historical perspective. Our present age is no different — not only in the liberal democracies of the West, but also in the globalized world influenced by Western ideas. The strangeness of our day consists in a strong moral passion for the virtue of justice sitting alongside a loss of confidence in the very foundations for justice, and even an eagerness to undermine them….

Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 Notable Updates

The rest is here: Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 Notable Updates

1) My list of bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate now stands at 115 . So well over half of the U.S. bishops who head dioceses have spoken out. 2) Senator Marco Rubio today introduced a bill (“the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012″) to repeal the Obama/HHS mandate. This is significant because the Democrat-controlled Senate will be the hardest obstacle to overcome on the way to getting legislation to President Obama’s desk to overturn this onerous law. 3) Pat Buchanan predicts that Catholics can win this fight if they play for keeps: Not only should the bishops file suit in federal court against the president and Sebelius for violation of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, they should inform the White House that no bishop will give an invocation at the Democratic Convention. Then, they should inform the White House that in the last two weeks of the 2012 campaign, priests in every parish will read from the pulpit at Sunday mass a letter denouncing Obama as anti-Catholic for denying the Church its right to live according to its beliefs. If Obama loses the Catholic vote, he loses the election…
