DIY throat blessings

Read the original post: DIY throat blessings

By Mary DeTurris Poust It’s the Feast of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. That can only mean one thing here at OSV Daily Take. It’s time for me to pull out the old do-it-yourself throat blessing post for those people who can’t getting a blessing at their own parish. I’m not one to let such traditions go so easily. I’ve been known to hold candles up to the throats of my own kids or my faith formation students to give them the blessing they won’t get otherwise. In fact, I’ve got a new set of white candles in arm’s reach right now, just waiting for the kids to arrive home from school. Don’t worry. …

He was a pioneer of communication, especially when it came to the Catholic Church. His last wish was to launch an international news agency. Alfonso Nieto, achieved that goal with ROME REPORTS. As one of its main founders, he was also the agency’s first president.

If Christ did not "open the womb" of his Mother, why was he presented in the Temple?

Please click the link to read the reflection on today’s Gospel: If Christ did not "open the womb" of his Mother, why was he presented in the Temple?

February 2 nd , Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord” . (Luke 2:22-23) The Church teaches, as a matter of dogma ( de fide ) which every Catholic must believe, that Mary was a virgin not only before birth and after birth, but also during birth. This dogma states that Mary, even during the very act of giving birth, remained a virgin – hence, the word “virgin” refers not merely to refraining from sexual pleasure, but also to physical integrity. Mary, as ever-virgin, suffered no harm to the physical closure of her virginal womb when she brought forth the Savior. Rather, he came forth from her as he came forth from the sealed tomb and as he entered the closed upper-room. The Church Fathers and Doctors (as well as the great mystics) tell us that Our Lord passed through the virginal cloister of Mary’s womb as thought proceeding from intellect and as light passing through glass. [we have already discussed this in previous articles – here , here , and here (in this last, we show that Jesus is still human even though he was born miraculously)] However, the above verse from St. Luke’s Gospel seems to be against the Catholic dogma of Mary’s perpetual (physical) virginity…

Day Six: Garden of Gethsemane and City of David

Original post: Day Six: Garden of Gethsemane and City of David

My fellow Catholic journalists and I did a lot of climbing in Jerusalem today. Whereas on Monday we walked the Via Dolorosa, today we traveled the route that Jesus took down the Mount of Olives during his glorious entry into the city on Palm Sunday. Along the way, we stopped at churches associated with Christ’s life and ministry — the Church of the Ascension, the Church of the Pater Noster, where tradition holds that Jesus taught his disciples the Lord’s Prayer; the teardrop-shaped Dominus Flevit, where Jesus wept over the fate of Jerusalem; and the Garden of Gethsemane (below) and its Church of All Nations. Gethsemane, with its gnarled, 2,000-year-old olive trees, was enough to inspire meditations on Christ’s agony and betrayal, but the Church of All Nations (also called the Basilica of The Agony) certainly provided the proper atmosphere for such reflections as well. The dark church (the only true light comes from purple alabaster windows) holds the rock upon which Jesus was praying when he was arrested. Next came our ascent up Mount Zion, stopping at the beautiful Church of Peter in Gallicantu, which commemorates Peter’s denial of Jesus ( gallicantu means cock crow). Tradition states that the site was the home of the high priest Caiaphas, and that Jesus was imprisoned in a crypt below the present church. Climbing a bit more up Mount Zion, we visited the site believed to hold King David’s tomb and then the Upper Room, which commemorates The Last Supper…

“Single Issue” Voting Returns–with a Vengence

Read the original post: “Single Issue” Voting Returns–with a Vengence

Catholic voting is not “single issue,” but it does prioritize some central important concerns over others. Liberal Catholics who were looking for an excuse to support pro-abortion Democrats have long criticized pro-life Catholics for saying that the murder of over a million innocent children a year in the U.S. actually takes priority over issues that liberals prefer Democrats on. But now that the secular tyranny of President Obama has finally shaken some liberal Catholics out of their confusion, “single issue” politics is making a major comeback on the central issue of religious freedom, and specifically on freedom for the Church to be the Church. Cardinal Mahony emphasized in his statement against the Obama abortifacient dictate: “For me there is no other fundamental issue as important as this one as we enter into the Presidential and Congressional campaigns. Every candidate must be pressed to declare his/her position on all of the fundamental life issues, especially the role of government to determine what conscience decision must be followed.” The National Catholic Reporter’s Michael Sean Winters similarly explained to his liberal friends why Obama’s attack on religious freedom was a deal breaker for him: “I do not believe in one-issue politics, but I do believe that a candidate can take a stand on one issue that makes it impossible to vote for them. For me, the HHS decision was one such issue for Obama.” Of course that is exactly the description that pro-lifers have made of their position over the years. We aren’t “single issue” voting in the derogatory sense–we are voting on “disqualifying issues,” or as Catholics often describe them, “non-negotiables.” It was never actually true that culturally-conscious Catholics were “single issue” voters…
