Mitt Romney vs. Obama Administration’s War on Religious Liberty

Read more: Mitt Romney vs. Obama Administration’s War on Religious Liberty

Mitt Romney has long appreciated the growing threats against religious liberty in our midst. He faced them as governor of Massachusetts, as the conscience rights of Catholic Charities’ adoption work was challenged. He talked about them in a major speech in his last campaign for the GOP nomination. Today in an oped , he takes on these threats directly. This, it seems to me, is the money graph: It is a prerequisite to the preservation of our liberty that our government not dictate to religious institutions the principles by which they are to carry out their charitable and divine mission. Religious liberty and freedom of conscience flow from the common conviction that it is freedom not coercion that exalts the individual, just as it raises up the nation. Many conservatives, it is no secret, worry that there will not be enough contrast between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, if Romney is the Republican nominee. This oped points to dramatic and crucial contrast…

A pro-life legal group today urged a federal appeals court to uphold an earlier decision that blocked the enforcement of New York City’s recently approved ordinance targeting crisis pregnancy centers. In July, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the enactment of the measure abrogating the First Amendment rights of the crisis pregnancy centers. …

Obama Wrong to Celebrate Abortion as Roe vs. Wade Turns 39

Read more from the original source: Obama Wrong to Celebrate Abortion as Roe vs. Wade Turns 39

On Jan. 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Roe v. Wade that literally wiped the abortion laws of all 50 states off the books. In one fell swoop, the court not only legalized abortion on demand, but pronounced abortion a fundamental right by saying that a so-called “right to privacy” found …

Two Victories for Same-Sex Marriage

Read more: Two Victories for Same-Sex Marriage

Same-sex marriage advocates made progress in Maine and Maryland on Thursday, January 26, 2012. Read about what happened and see how you can take action to defend marriage. Maine Maine, the state where the people overturned the actions of the legislature in 2009 by rejecting same sex marriage 53% to 47%, will have a referendum on the ballot in November. Maine is the only New England state without same-sex marriage or civil unions. Same-sex marriage advocates in Maine have been working since August to collect the 100,000 signatures needed to put the initiative on the ballot. If successful, Maine would be the first state to allow same-sex marriage by a popular vote. It is already recognized in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Vermont, and civil unions for same-sex couples are allowed in Rhode Island. …

Ron Paul could do better in defending the right to life

Original post: Ron Paul could do better in defending the right to life

While most libertarians support legal abortion, Ron Paul is to be commended for not only resisting that trend but using his knowledge and experience as an obstetrician to promote the pro-life point of view. There are many pro-life Catholics (and other Christians) who like Ron Paul’s views on economics and foreign policy who otherwise would not support his candidacy if Ron Paul were pro-choice. Without these voters, Ron Paul’s vote totals would be definitely be lower. So I’m glad that Ron Paul is generally pro-life. But he sure could do better on the defense of human life. Let’s look at some votes he cast before he started running for president in 2008. Ron Paul voted No on a national ban on human cloning, Roll Call No. 39 on Feb. 27, 2003. …

Overturning Roe? Not anytime soon—Thanks to Catholics

Read the original: Overturning Roe? Not anytime soon—Thanks to Catholics

“ Romney and Santorum: Roe v. Wade Should Be Overturned .” Thus read the headline in LifeNews.com. My reaction: No, not anytime soon. Don’t get me wrong, I love LifeNews. Few publications are so thoroughly excellent in what they do. And I like Rick Santorum. As for Mitt Romney, he is not my top choice for president, but I can’t say I dislike him. But what about this headline? …

Religious Liberty 9, President Obama 0

Original post: Religious Liberty 9, President Obama 0

By MARK L. RIENZI | The Supreme Court decided its most important religious-freedom case in decades yesterday. And President Barack Obama lost, 9-0. The case, Hosanna-Tabor Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC, concerns whether religious groups should be free from government interference when choosing their religious leaders. For decades, the lower courts have applied a doctrine called the “ministerial exception,” which … …
