HHS mandate a ‘slap in the face,’ Catholic Latino group says

San Antonio, Texas, Feb 1, 2012 / 06:15 am ( .- The HHS contraception mandate is an insult to the Catholic community and shows that President Obama needs prayer, according to a national group of Latino leaders. “President Barack Obama has not just given the Catholic community a slap in the face, he is telling Hispanic Catholics to limit our families and forget our religious beliefs,” Robert Aguirre, president of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, said Jan. 31. He cited President Obama’s May 2009 speech at the University of Notre Dame in which the president said “Let’s honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause.” The HHS mandate, Aguirre said, showed “the president’s promise was nothing more than a shell game.” On Jan. 20 the Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule requiring “preventive care” insurance coverage for sterilizations and contraception, including the abortifacient drug Ella. While the mandate has a religious exemption, the exemption will not cover many Catholic health care systems, colleges, and charities. Over one hundred Catholic bishops have published statements objecting to the mandate and asking Catholics to voice their opposition. “If ever there was proof that this administration takes the Hispanic vote for granted it is in this policy so lacking in respect for us, for our faith and for the religious liberty upon which this country was founded,” said Maria Suarez Hamm, a CALL member from Washington D.C. …

Too Little, Too Late?

More: Too Little, Too Late?

For all those wanting a little vim and vigor with their morning coffee, Bishop David Zubick’s take on the Obama contraception mandate should do the trick. If it’s anything, it’s chock full of both. Bishop Zubick writes: Kathleen Sebelius and through her, the Obama administration, have said “To Hell with You” to the Catholic faithful of the United States. To Hell with your religious beliefs, To Hell with your religious liberty, To Hell with your freedom of conscience. We’ll give you a year, they are saying, and then you have to knuckle under. As Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops responded, “in effect, the president is saying that we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.” Sadly, while reading his letter, as well as so many other impassioned condemnations of the ruling from our bishops, priests, and Catholic leaders, I can’t help but find myself wondering if we’re pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Don’t get me wrong. …

Truth Inside Out, An Army of Davids to the Rescue

Excerpt from: Truth Inside Out, An Army of Davids to the Rescue

Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles writes : Our country was founded on a great moral truth — that all men and women are created equal and are born with God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Roe v. Wade turned this beautiful truth on inside out. The Supreme Court, in effect, said that our rights do not come from God but instead are bestowed by government — by courts and legislatures. But that’s not the truth. And if our rights are not endowed by God, then they are subject to the random whims of those who hold political power. The strong get to decide what is right and wrong, who has rights and who does not, who gets to live and who does not. So that is why the Church will always remain at the center of this great struggle for the right to life in our time. …
