Read the original post: On Obama’s Unwinnable Battle Against Religious Liberty
What a crazy week it has been, between the Obamacare/HHS mandate, over 150 bishops speaking out against it , and the battle between Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood. A great many people are visiting this site today because of my comments on the Komen situation — my most recent thoughts on that can be found here (ongoing updates can be found at my twitter page @AmericanPapist — the story is very fast moving and complex). But I don’t want to lose track of the “bigger” story – Obama’s war against religious liberty in this country and the Catholic effort to win this war definitively. Peggy Noonan calls this a “battle the President can’t win” in her syndicated column today for the Wall Street Journal and says “President Obama just may have lost the election” because, in going after the religious liberty of Catholics, he has “awakened a sleeping giant”: If [Catholics] stay strong and fight, they will win. This is in fact a potentially unifying moment for American Catholics, long split left, right and center. Catholic conservatives will immediately and fully oppose the administration’s decision. But Catholic liberals, who feel embarrassed and undercut, have also come out in opposition. …

I’m driving to a funeral in the morning. I’ll try not to drop tears on my keyboard as I type this. Please indulge a small autobiography of faith. I haven’t seen my old friend, Mr. Bosler, Big Ray, for a few years. But the fondness and the memories have not faded with time. Mr. Bosler was the one who taught me that the faith is reasonable…

Read more from the original source: When we lose sight of ‘the very poor’
Posted by Mary DeTurris Poust Regardless of which side of the political fence you’re on, you’ll want to head over to Ed Mechmann’s blog, Stepping Out of the Boat , to read his observations on the recent controversy over Mitt Romney’s comment that he wasn’t “concerned about the very poor.” Can we ever — no matter how we think poverty should be addressed through public policy — stop being concerned about those people who deal with hunger, homelessness, lack of medical care and more every day? In context or out of context, it’s hard to hear Romney’s comment and not feel a lack of compassion, a harshness that benefits no one. Ed’s post drove home that point for me. Here’s what he had to say on his blog : A candidate for the presidency, in a recent interview, remarked that he wasn’t “concerned about the very poor” because there is a sufficient “safety net” that will help them in their need. One can debate long into the night the question of the best public policies to address the problem of poverty in the United States. There are people of good will who stress-free market solutions, such as policies that emphasize education and economic opportunity. There are others of good will who emphasize the need for private charity to address the needs of poor people. And there are others who believe that the problem requires increased spending by local, state or federal government programs. …

See original here: The One On the Right
I was driving along the beautiful back roads of Western PA yesterday afternoon, when that happy Johnny Cash song— “The One on the Right is on the Left —came on the radio. As I tried to keep the car at a reasonable speed (Johnny Cash and back roads always being a somewhat dangerous combination for me), I couldn’t help but wish it were as easy to separate religion and politics as it is to separate folk music and politics. It would boost the charity factor in CatholicVote’s com-boxes by about 150 percent, as well as make for more pleasant Thanksgiving dinners from sea to shining sea. But alas, it’s not. For as long as politics remains an arena that’s about 25 percent principle and 75 percent prudential application, very good people of very good faith are going to disagree on questions of what constitutes wise public policy and good governance. Likewise, for as long as part of our vocation as lay Catholics remains working in the public square to renew the temporal order, very good people of very good faith are not just going to disagree on those questions; they’re going to disagree passionately. The passion is all to the good. It’s sign that we recognize the urgency of our calling to take the Gospel into the world and build a civilization of love. …

As we have come to the final day of the Catholic Press Association’s tour of Israel, I can’t help but have bittersweet feelings. We’ve visited so many amazing sites in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Nazareth and Jerusalem, but I know we’ve only seen a small sampling of the country. Vad Vashem One of those amazing places was Yad Vashem, which we visited this morning. The Holocaust History Museum, which we toured, is just one part of a campus that includes memorials, a research center and a school. The museum is a long, triangular structure that leads visitors on a cross-crossing path through the horrors of the Holocaust using displays, personal artifacts and video testimonies of survivors. It was only after touring the museum that I realized the path slopes down toward the center of the museum, and gently rises again toward the end, symbolizing the hope of the Jewish people after the atrocities. Church of the Holy Sepulchre It was disappointing to see the small, but controversial display critical of Pope Pius XII’s role during World War II. Knowing the efforts of people such as Sister Margherita Marchione and Ron Rychlak, author of “Hitler, the War and the Pope,” to bring to light the pontiff’s efforts to save Jews, I hope one day the display will tell a different story. …

Denver, Colo., Feb 1, 2012 / 01:56 pm ( .- Former Mexican soap opera star turned pro-life activist Eduardo Verastegui told a crowd of over 500 that he thinks abortion in the U.S. will one day come to an end. “I think we will see regeneration and the end of abortion in this country,” he said at a sold out Jan. 26 fundraiser for Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in Denver, Colo. Verastegui gave his testimony about growing up in a pro-life country and eventually seeing Mexico City legalize abortion. “Pro-choice, pro-life, all that, all those terms in Mexico didn’t exist until a few years ago when Mexico City passed that horrible law.” Although abortion was legalized in Mexico City in 2007, 19 states have since passed constitutional amendments

Read full article here: HHS mandate a ‘slap in the face,’ Catholic Latino group says
San Antonio, Texas, Feb 1, 2012 / 06:15 am ( .- The HHS contraception mandate is an insult to the Catholic community and shows that President Obama needs prayer, according to a national group of Latino leaders. “President Barack Obama has not just given the Catholic community a slap in the face, he is telling Hispanic Catholics to limit our families and forget our religious beliefs,” Robert Aguirre, president of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, said Jan. 31. He cited President Obama’s May 2009 speech at the University of Notre Dame in which the president said “Let’s honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause.” The HHS mandate, Aguirre said, showed “the president’s promise was nothing more than a shell game.” On Jan. 20 the Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule requiring “preventive care” insurance coverage for sterilizations and contraception, including the abortifacient drug Ella. While the mandate has a religious exemption, the exemption will not cover many Catholic health care systems, colleges, and charities. Over one hundred Catholic bishops have published statements objecting to the mandate and asking Catholics to voice their opposition. “If ever there was proof that this administration takes the Hispanic vote for granted it is in this policy so lacking in respect for us, for our faith and for the religious liberty upon which this country was founded,” said Maria Suarez Hamm, a CALL member from Washington D.C. …

March for Life 2011 (BreakPoint) – Last month I had the opportunity to join a crowd of roughly 200,000 people who marched on Washington, D.C., in the 2011 March for Life. This was my first national March for Life. I had marched at the state capital in North Carolina before, but this experience was very different. But though the size of the march was much greater, and the number of members of…

See original here: We the People…Conservatism for the Common Good
In his State of the Union address last week, President Obama declined to discuss any of the major policy initiatives from his first term. (That’s understandable, given that ObamaCare and the Stimulus remain widely unpopular.) Nor did he discuss any bold plans to address the country’s twin crises of unemployment and crushing public debt. (Partly because that would be a tacit admission that he has, after three years in office, severely aggravated the debt problem while failing to curb unemployment.) So rather than talk about the disappointing business of governing, he decided to do something he’s much better at: the president made a moving case for America as a shared good and common endeavor. Each time I look at that flag, I’m reminded that our destiny is stitched together like those 50 stars and those 13 stripes. No one built this country on their own. This nation is great because we built it together. This nation is great because we worked as a team. This nation is great because we get each other’s backs. …
