On Obama’s Unwinnable Battle Against Religious Liberty

Read the original post: On Obama’s Unwinnable Battle Against Religious Liberty

What a crazy week it has been, between the Obamacare/HHS mandate, over 150 bishops speaking out against it , and the battle between Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood. A great many people are visiting this site today because of my comments on the Komen situation — my most recent thoughts on that can be found here (ongoing updates can be found at my twitter page @AmericanPapist — the story is very fast moving and complex). But I don’t want to lose track of the “bigger” story – Obama’s war against religious liberty in this country and the Catholic effort to win this war definitively. Peggy Noonan calls this a “battle the President can’t win” in her syndicated column today for the Wall Street Journal and says “President Obama just may have lost the election” because, in going after the religious liberty of Catholics, he has “awakened a sleeping giant”: If [Catholics] stay strong and fight, they will win. This is in fact a potentially unifying moment for American Catholics, long split left, right and center. Catholic conservatives will immediately and fully oppose the administration’s decision. But Catholic liberals, who feel embarrassed and undercut, have also come out in opposition. …

Washington D.C., Feb 3, 2012 / 01:48 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has pledged to overturn the HHS contraception mandate that he says takes “particular aim” at Catholics. “I stand with the Catholic bishops and all religious organizations in their strenuous objection to this liberty- and conscience-stifling regulation,” Romney wrote in a Feb. 3 Washington Examiner column titled “President Obama

Mitt Romney vs. Obama Administration’s War on Religious Liberty

Mitt Romney has long appreciated the growing threats against religious liberty in our midst. He faced them as governor of Massachusetts, as the conscience rights of Catholic Charities’ adoption work was challenged. He talked about them in a major speech in his last campaign for the GOP nomination. Today in an oped , he takes on these threats directly. This, it seems to me, is the money graph: It is a prerequisite to the preservation of our liberty that our government not dictate to religious institutions the principles by which they are to carry out their charitable and divine mission. Religious liberty and freedom of conscience flow from the common conviction that it is freedom not coercion that exalts the individual, just as it raises up the nation. Many conservatives, it is no secret, worry that there will not be enough contrast between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, if Romney is the Republican nominee. This oped points to dramatic and crucial contrast…

White House’s defense of mandate called inaccurate, misleading

Read the full article here: White House’s defense of mandate called inaccurate, misleading

Washington D.C., Feb 3, 2012 / 01:05 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- An expert in religious freedom says that the White House’s defense of the contraception mandate contains inaccurate information and does not address the main complaints raised by its critics. Brian Walsh, executive director of the American Religious Freedom program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said that some of the the claims made by the White House are “not factually accurate” and a number of its points “aren’t even relevant.” “It’s certainly not a direct response” to the concerns of religious freedom that have been raised in recent days, but is simply restating the administration’s position on contraception,Walsh told n Feb. 2. Walsh’s remarks were aimed at a Feb. 1 blog post by Cecilia Muñoz, the Director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council, who attempted to clarify “the facts” surrounding the controversial mandate. On Jan. 20, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that virtually all employers would be required to purchase health insurance plans that cover contraception – including drugs that cause abortion – and sterilization at no cost to employees. The very narrow religious exemption to the mandate includes only those organizations that exist for the purpose of inculcating religious values and that both primarily serve and employ members of their own faith. …

The New Anti-Catholicism: Occupy the Vatican

Go directly to: The New Anti-Catholicism: Occupy the Vatican

The old anti-Catholicism found its expression in the mid-nineteenth century when the first large wave of Catholic immigrants arrived in the United States. Some of these immigrant groups had set up their own private religious schools. Many non-Catholic Americans, however, believed that Catholic schools indoctrinated students in superstitions that were inconsistent with the principles of American democracy. Therefore, in order to make sure that such schools would not receive government funding of any sort, federal and state legislation was proposed that forbade the use of public resources for “religious,” i.e. Catholic, purposes.

Obama, Metaxas call for authentic religion at prayer breakfast

Read the complete text here: Obama, Metaxas call for authentic religion at prayer breakfast

Washington D.C., Feb 2, 2012 / 08:08 pm ( .- The need for a genuine faith that translates into action was the theme chosen by both President Obama and keynote speaker Eric Metaxas at the 2012 National Prayer Breakfast in the nation’s capital. The breakfast, which was held in the district’s Hilton Hotel on Feb. 2, attracted more than 3,000 guests. “We can’t leave our values at the door,” President Obama said, highlighting the importance of having a faith that is lived out “not just with words, but with deeds.” The president stated that the values of his Christian faith motivate the decisions he makes in office. As a Christian, he said, his economic policies coincide with the biblical principle of “requiring much from those who have been given so much.” He also cast his efforts to “prevent atrocities” in other countries and “take on issues like human trafficking” as being “about the biblical call to care for the least of these.” President Obama added that his administration is “linking arms with faith-based groups,” such as Catholic Charities, to work towards “strengthening adoption” and serving those “who are struggling with poverty,” among other initiatives.

Philadelphia, Pa., Feb 3, 2012 / 06:08 am ( .- The Obama administration has betrayed Catholics by refusing to expand the religious exemption in Health and Human Services’ contraception mandate, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput says. “The administration’s only concession was to give our institutions a one-year delay to comply,” he said in a Feb. 2 letter. “This is not merely inadequate. It is dangerous. And it betrays the good faith of many Catholics who – until now – have supported the current administration with an honest will.” Archbishop Chaput is one of over 140 U.S. …

Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 More Important Updates [Updated w/ Video]

Read more from the original source: Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 More Important Updates [Updated w/ Video]

Plenty happening on this story: 1) By my updated count , over 70% of bishops who head dioceses in the U.S. have spoken out against the mandate (131 of 184). I think we’ll pass 75% this weekend easily as more and more bishops join the movement. 2) CNSNews reports that White House press secretary Jay Carney claimed there was “no constitutional rights issue” when questioned about the mandate. This coming from the administration that just lost their religious liberty argument 9-0 at the Supreme Court. UPDATE — here is the video: At one point he says: “I would also just note that our robust partnerships with the Catholic Church and other communities of faith will continue.” — I wouldn’t be so sure. The Commonweal blog has a full transcript of both times the issue came up in the press briefing. Some clues are beginning to emerge about the Obama’s administration’s attitude towards the Catholic counter-reaction, but more on that from me later…
