By Matthew Warner | Surely we can all agree that orthodox Catholic teaching must be defended and promoted vigorously in this challenging time in our history. Here in America, and across the industrialized world, a vicious relativism runs rampant through a culture in crisis — a crisis of faith. But now that I’ve been blogging for awhile, I’ve discovered there is … …
By JUSTIN BELL | At 9 years old, Lila Rose saw an image of an aborted baby in a book at her home. She said it struck her to the heart, and she asked, How could anybody do this to a baby? In time, she became educated about the abortion issue and wanted to act, to speak out, and help save … …
Washington D.C., Feb 2, 2012 / 08:08 pm ( .- The need for a genuine faith that translates into action was the theme chosen by both President Obama and keynote speaker Eric Metaxas at the 2012 National Prayer Breakfast in the nation’s capital. The breakfast, which was held in the district’s Hilton Hotel on Feb. 2, attracted more than 3,000 guests. “We can’t leave our values at the door,” President Obama said, highlighting the importance of having a faith that is lived out “not just with words, but with deeds.” The president stated that the values of his Christian faith motivate the decisions he makes in office. As a Christian, he said, his economic policies coincide with the biblical principle of “requiring much from those who have been given so much.” He also cast his efforts to “prevent atrocities” in other countries and “take on issues like human trafficking” as being “about the biblical call to care for the least of these.” President Obama added that his administration is “linking arms with faith-based groups,” such as Catholic Charities, to work towards “strengthening adoption” and serving those “who are struggling with poverty,” among other initiatives.
In the cover story in a recent Atlantic magazine, Kate Bolick declares her liberation from marriage: “It’s time to embrace new ideas about romance and family – and to acknowledge the end of ‘traditional’ marriage as society’s highest ideal.”…
As we have come to the final day of the Catholic Press Association’s tour of Israel, I can’t help but have bittersweet feelings. We’ve visited so many amazing sites in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Nazareth and Jerusalem, but I know we’ve only seen a small sampling of the country. Vad Vashem One of those amazing places was Yad Vashem, which we visited this morning. The Holocaust History Museum, which we toured, is just one part of a campus that includes memorials, a research center and a school. The museum is a long, triangular structure that leads visitors on a cross-crossing path through the horrors of the Holocaust using displays, personal artifacts and video testimonies of survivors. It was only after touring the museum that I realized the path slopes down toward the center of the museum, and gently rises again toward the end, symbolizing the hope of the Jewish people after the atrocities. Church of the Holy Sepulchre It was disappointing to see the small, but controversial display critical of Pope Pius XII’s role during World War II. Knowing the efforts of people such as Sister Margherita Marchione and Ron Rychlak, author of “Hitler, the War and the Pope,” to bring to light the pontiff’s efforts to save Jews, I hope one day the display will tell a different story. …
Philadelphia, Pa., Feb 1, 2012 / 01:31 pm ( CNA/EWTN News ).- Pope Benedict XVI has offered his condolences to Philadelphia Catholics following the loss of their former archbishop Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua, who died on the evening of Jan. 31 at the age of 88. In a telegram to Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia, the Pope said he joined the faithful of the archdiocese “in commending the late cardinal’s soul to God, the Father of mercies, with gratitude for his years of episcopal ministry among Christ’s flock in Philadelphia.” Cardinal Bevilacqua, who led the archdiocese from 1988 to 2003, died in his sleep at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pa. He was suffering from cancer and dementia at the time of his death. Pope Benedict conveyed his blessing to the faithful of Philadelphia, as he recalled the late cardinal’s “longstanding commitment to social justice and the pastoral care of immigrants” as well as his “expert contribution” to the revision of canon law after the Second Vatican Council. …

President Barack Obama is adding to his massive pro-abortion record by placing yet another abortion activist on a top federal appeals court — this time a lawyer credited with helping craft the Roe v. Wade decision. Obama has appointed Andrew Hurwitz to the 9th Circuit Court, the most liberal appeals court in the country based …

An evangelical friend in Washington passes along to his email list a note he recently received. Just passes it along, as though it were a normal sort of thing, and asks for comments: Did you see this? [ An article about the rediscovery of a relic. ] Apparently, this relic contains what are supposed to be the relics of the actual crucifixion of Jesus: a piece of the Crown of Thorns, the sponge used to dab his lips, and a sliver of the cross itself, all woven into the cloth. But, oops, somewhere along the way, these supposed precious artifacts from the true cross and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ got misplaced by some nuns. I was fascinated with this comment, by Maureen A. Tilley, professor of theology at Fordham University, “It is exciting because it is a link, however tenuous, to the times of the apostles, the time of medieval saints.” The reaction in its locale to the discovery is even more tragic– The discovery of the relic has brought a new faith to this once bustling, but now struggling, community. Attendees at a noon Mass in St. …

I’ve been getting an awful lot of flack for this morning’s post. Some people think it’s too depressing. Which maybe it is. Others that I’m suggesting it’s too late to fight back. Which I’m not. So, what was my point, however badly made? That we can’t win this fight in the long term on the legislative or legal fronts alone. Here’s the deal…
And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss, And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross… – Lepanto by G. K. Chesterton I have sympathy for the sentiment Emily expresses . I do. I know it’s a lament shared by many Catholics when they look at the state of the Church now. It’s important we acknowledge past sins of omission — personal, pastoral, institutional. It’s important that we get our history straight. But why…
Fr. Angelo preaches on the Gospel account of the exorcism of the demoniac at Capernaum where Jesus demonstrates His authority that was far greater than the scribes. Father explains how the source and nature of this higher authority rests on the divinity of Jesus and how this same authority is manifest today through the Magisterium that Christ established.
